Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan since 2021, said the government will make efforts to promote Web3 services, including those related to non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, and Metaverse.
In his October 3 speech before Japan’s National Diet, Kishida said the government’s investment in the country’s digital transformation has already included issuing NFTs for local governments using digital technology to solve problems in their jurisdictions. He also proposed to digitize national identity cards. In addition, the Prime Minister stated that the Cabinet would “strengthen efforts to expand the use of Web 3.0 services using the Metaverse and NFT.”

Kishida said that Japanese technology investment will extend to the development and production of semiconductors in a joint effort with the United States and work to reform regulations related to the technology sector. The current prime minister, who took office in October 2021, was followed by former prime minister Yoshihide Suga, who has said he supports taxing bitcoin (BTC) transactions in Japan.
